Match Report - Abersychan 38 v 29 Cwmcarn Utd

Match Report

Saturday 2nd September 2017

Abersychan ARFC 38 v 29 Cwmcarn United

The sun was shining for our first fixture of the league season, hosting Cwmcarn Utd. At our Pentwyn Field. Cwmcarn did the double on us last season, so the team were keen to right a few wrongs.

The game however did not start as planned with Aber conceding the first score, an un converted try for the visitors followed by a penalty goal. The remainder of the first half was dominated by Abersychan scoring four un answered tries and three conversions. The first two were scored by Deri King through an excellent solo effort and another from a great offload by Jonathan Wells which seemed to galvanise the rest of the team. Excellent passing play by forwards and backs lead to the other two scores in the first half through Jamie Ireland and Brendan Burns, 3 out of the 4 were converted by Deri King making the half time score 26-8 to the home team.

The second half started much the same as the end of the first with Abersychan dominating putting pressure on the Cwmcarn try line, which eventually lead to a penalty try from a scrum. After this try the home team seemed to take their foot of the gas and lost concentration, conceding 3 sloppy tries, two of which from quick penalties and lineouts.

Abersychan eventually wrestled back control of the game with Rhys Apperly crossing the line for the final try, coming from distance to score off a tap penalty.  The final score: Abersychan ARFC 38 v 28 Cwmcarn Utd. An excellent start to the season for Aber, next week we have a bye in the league followed by a home fixture in the bowl, hosting St Julian’s on the 23rd September.
